Materials for Transport Aircraft Structures – (AMTAS) Partner

Edmonds Community College is the only community college nationally partnered in a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration Center of Excellence. Recognized as a Center of Excellence in December, 2004 by the FAA, the Edmonds Community College – AMTAS partnership is a close collaboration between academic institutions, aerospace companies and regulatory bodies including the FAA and EASA.

The Center of Excellence on Advanced Materials for Transport Aircraft Structures (AMTAS) is a partnership between the University of Washington, Washington State University, Oregon State University, Edmonds Community College, and leading aerospace companies including the Boeing Company. AMTAS, as part of the Joint Center for Advanced Materials Research (JAMS) sponsored by the FAA Airport and Aircraft Safety R&D Division, was established in 2003. JAMS includes additional universities such as Wichita State University, Northwestern University, Purdue University, Tuskegee University, University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Delaware

Critical Composite Maintenance and Repair Issues

This introductory course on critical composite maintenance and repair issues provides an awareness of safety issues regarding the maintenance and repair of composite materials utilized in aerospace. The course is a blend of distance (web-based) learning to establish composite repair knowledge and principals, and regional laboratories where practitioners will practice this knowledge in a hands-on environment. The course is designed for engineers, technicians, inspectors, and other individuals interfacing with composite materials technology.

This course was developed through Edmonds Community College and the Federal Aviation Administration, in collaboration with worldwide industry and academic partners. The course provides the first standard in awareness of safety issues specifically related to composite materials maintenance. The course reflects the consensus of opinions of experts collected through a series of workshops held internationally and led by Edmonds Community College.
