Materials Science Technology

Edmonds Community College is home to MatEd, which is the National Resource Center for Materials Education. The mission of the MatEd Resource Center is to be a national repository of benchmark community college curriculum in the area of materials science. This work is part of a larger project funded by the Advanced Technological Education Program of the National Science Foundation. The Materials Science program identified below is a part of the MatEd inventory. (#05001475)

The Materials Science and Technology program at Edmonds Community College focuses on developing the advanced skills industry needs for working with composites, metals, ceramics and polymers, plus leading-edge smart materials and nanotechnology. Courses provide real-world, hands-on experience using computer-aided three-dimensional design, prototyping, fabrication and testing technology in one of the nation’s most advanced materials science training labs.

To stay competitive in industry today, successful product design relies on the proper selection of materials based on their known properties. Technological advances depend on the development of new, advanced materials. Composites are the materials for the future. Classes provide an introduction to material science and focus on composite materials, engineering design and manufacturing of structures. A number of industry leaders including The Boeing Company, C&D Zodiac, Hobart Machined Products, Inc., Intec, and Airtech International support the college program.

The Associate Degree in Material Science program at Edmonds Community College provides one of the few degree programs in this field offered in the United States, and the only two-year academic degree offered in this field in Washington State. Graduates qualify as materials science technicians. Edmonds Community College is also a member of the National Science Foundation SpaceTEC Consortium, associated with Brevard Community College and NASA. Edmonds Community College is the composites lead to develop the test bank questions for the national certification for composite technicians. Individuals passing this national exam qualify as technicians to work for organizations including NASA.
